Kimikiss Pure Rouge

A mind fart, according Urban Dictionary, happens when you think something is brewing but nothing comes out. A mind fart show has to be something that was promising initially but turned out to be a letdown. At the beginning, this show had a simple formula that was capable of capturing my attention: good chemistry that effused from the characters. But the magic faded away when Mao decided to have a go with Kooooouichi, rather than choosing saxo-boy. Moral of the story: the osananajimi bond is a powerful force that defies all odds, second only to the power of siscon/wincest.

Code Geass R2

Code Geass was very interesting to me because it had featured an anti-hero like protagonist whose ideals were those that I could somehow relate to. I was initially excited by the first season because it had so much potential in becoming a compelling story about idealism and deep sh*t stuff but my hopes were dashed by its convoluted plot. Putting my disappointment aside, it was still an interesting watch to follow because of all the laughter it had brought. Do not get me started about how many memes and crazy shopped pictures it had spawned. So what if some people said it was a horrible show? They were just tsundere for it. After the show had ended, most anime fans suffered from withdrawal symptoms because of a lack of Code Geass. Code Geass, a personal disappointment and an unexpected surprise for me.

Most Spectacular Anime of 2008

Macross Frontier

I believe a spectacular “thing” is something that just simply succeeds at the task of awing the crowd. I, personally, found the first 15 episodes of Macross Frontier to be an overwhelming experience. Knowing how popular this show is, there is no need for me to reiterate its formula for success. Uh. Nevermind; I shall. Addictive music. Dogfights. POP SINGERS. Space battles that embodify the idea of “AWESOMENESS.” This show was one big romantic opera. I call it a romantic piece because it was brimming with an epic sense as I am constantly reminded that it is a tale of mankind expanding deeper into space.

SOUL EATER

People love to look down upon shounen shows because they are just about fighting. Well, it is an action genre so what can you expect? Hate bad shounen and not good shounen is my policy. This year’s best action anime for the Blue Fox Alley happens to be a shounen. Nothing can go wrong if you have Excalibur.

Best Drama of 2008

Gundam OO Season 1

Gundam OO had an ending that could have been more riveting if it had gone easy on the emo. But after overlooking that issue, which is always an irk as I am allergic to emo, you would fine a decently conducted conclusion. No one had expected the almighty Gundam meisters to suffer any casualties so the deaths of Lockon and other Celestial Being members brought a shock. Suffice to say, you have to watch the ending of the first season in order to understand why it has the best drama for the year 2008 in my opinion.

I strongly believe that there are some aspects in life that simply cannot be explained. Defying logic and rationality, I found myself exploring the treacherous domain of butsecks and unrealistic homosexual romance. Fine. I was just watching this for the lulz. It was really entertaining. It was either this or Kanokon.

WE NEED CHANGE ON THE INTERNETS” faction, but the magnitude of the controversy that this one brave man has stirred is worthy of remembering as we are close to the end of this year. Nevertheless, this lovely piece of epic drama has shown the tendency for people to stir up reactions of extreme polarities when it comes to interacting on the Internet. But I believe just like how we view Code Geass, we are all tsundere for Kaioshin-sama. We love you!

Eyecatch: Moving Onto The Fall 2008 Season

Real life hits us hard. The demanding work of a second year medicine student has greatly affected the activeness of the P-Meister, and I am still in the midst of getting used to life as a college student. Not to forget, our guest writer misakichii is a salaryman so you will not expect him to frequently churn out posts. However this imposed break from blogging gives us a precious moment to sort out our priorities, reflect on our goals in blogging and analyse the styles that we exude from our writings. So I exceptionally enjoy writing ‘eyecatch’ posts like this one because they share my feelings [and those of the P-Meister and misakichii as well] with the readers.

For this eyecatch post, we are going to talk about how the summer season has been to us as we welcome the new season of anime shows plus some random thoughts.

The P-Meister

Gundam 00 is a must watch as i just finished my Throne Eins model and lost its gun while painting its legs. Stupid me. Now I will need to find a new model, obviously from the second season.

Clannad is something i might skip and take Akane Iro ni Somaru Saka. A show where sausages will gather in the tavern when i blog about it. If it is bad, I’ll always go to Clannad.

The DMC movie is a must watch too.

The only anime from prev seasons which i’ll be following will be Soul Eater. Hopefully after To Love Ru and Macross Frontier end, I might be able to find the time to pick another. I can’t wait to find out who Rito and Alto would end up with. The drama… *sigh*

Anyway, even if i were to pick up something, i was thinking of shifting to manga or divert a little into figurine collection/crafting and even RPGs. Other interesting activities are re-watching Slam Dunk again whilst figuring how to pass my second year exams. Dang! I’m spending most of my time studying at the moment.

I can expect fall to be a great season for anime. Its the season for sequels! Gundam00, ef – a tale of melodies(EPIC WIN), shugo chara! 2, Clannad after story, Rosario Vampire and penguin musume heart. Not to forget the OVAs, Lucky Star and Seto no Hanayome.

There are the usual eroge to anime series (akane iro, chaos head), but whats special is the animefication of the popular “tales of” RPG series, Tales of Abyss. I had no idea it would be on TV when I started playing it 3 weeks ago. And boy, I’m at 40 hours of gameplay but I dont think I’m halfway through the game yet. Story is average, but the seiyuus that are made of pure win makes up for it. Yukana, Momoi, Takehito Koyasu and George Nakata. I started to have a liking for Yukana since i watched Oinari-sama.

Other new series include Tetsudo musume (I wonder what can they make up a plot with trains), Kemeko Deluxe and Toradora.

It was a pretty slow start for me for summer. Sekirei, Hidamari Sketch, ZnT and Nogizaka. They were ok, but they did not satisfy me much, especially Nogizaka, it was bad. But then came Strike Witches, which I started it while it was halfway through. It was the only anime moe enough for me.

And for my pick for weekly review? ef – a tale of melodies.

The Sojourner

I have to say that the shows that I have been following are mainly from the spring season with only Strike Witches and Nogizaka being the shows from the summer season that I am watching. It might be the case that I am just very picky but after seeing the AWESOMENESS of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Nanoha A’s, the shows of recent have been unable to excite me much. But Macross Frontier has been able to entertain me pretty well. It is epic but not EPIC and Ranka’s Ai Oboteimasuka was hauntingly beautiful but so inappropriate when it was sung. I have confidence that Kawamori and his team is able to pull off a decent ending for Frontier so I believe I am in for a treat when the conclusion arrives.

Moving on, I am fascinated by the ever changing online community as more blogs are born and new approaches in blogging are being discovered. I can guess that when anime blogging was new back then, the community was small and that made things very personal. But with more fans discovering the convenience of expressing their passion of the visual culture through the Internet, blogs and all sorts of sites have sprouted at a exponential rate (lol I am exaggerating)! Maybe it is right to say that the community is no longer the same but it appears to me that the anime loving community is simply branching into different ‘circles’ and it is the birth of such ‘circles’ that is creating new milieus for different means to express one’s unique love for Japanese culture. And it is the illusion of being overwhelmed by the evolution of the community that prompts an old-timer to think times have changed. The old path is still there, but there are new paths that have been paved that lie parallel to the old path.

And now I look towards the new season of anime. I am not really crazy about Clannad but having seen the first season of it, there is an obligation to follow the AFTER STORY arc. Apart from Clannad AFTER STORY, the second season of Gundam 00 is another show that I have to watch because I have seen the first season. So while Clannad and Gundam 00 are in my to-watch list because of self-imposed obligations, I express real interest in watching Nodame Cantabile 2. But wait! It is like a sequel as well!

You know what? I might just start episodic blogging for Nodame Cantabile.

‘If there could only be a word that is capable of describing the magnitude of grandeur of the Brittanian emperor’s palace, Charles Di Britannia’, those were my thoughts as I followed the reticent attendant through long stretching halls, gardens of the most exotic collection, a library that is probably the heart of all known knowledge and I had lost count to the number of doors that I had passed.

Finally, I was led to a door and I knew who it was waiting behind it. I gave a nod of appreciation towards the man who had brought me here and he gave a courteous bow in return.

“It is not easy being an attendant in this palace right? This place is huge!” I whispered to him as I made final checks on my attire.

“Not at all,” He replied. “But to be precise, I am a maid.”

“A maid you say?”

The surprise it was, and I assumed that the dress-like uniform he was wearing was some traditional wear of esoteric origin. Trying my best not to give him a look of queer, I avert away from him after realising that he IS wearing the head wear of a maid. It was only when the door made a creaking noise as it was being opened by the maid did I recall my original motive in being here. I took a deep breath before entering the chambers of the emperor of Britannia.

Still oblivious to the fact that I had entered his dwellings, the emperor remained engrossed in his reading of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows. With an intentional footstep that was much louder than normal, I finally caught his attention. He possesses a look that is a strange blend of contempt and kindness, a look bequeathed upon anyone whom he gazes upon. And that is exactly that reason most would cower before his presence.

In an attempt to maintain my nerve, I said to him, “Enjoying your read I hope? Your Majesty?”

“Not really,” He replied as he placed the book aside. “One of my princes ruined the story for me by revealing that Snape died in the end. As punishment, I banished him to one of our colonial territories. Area 101… I think.”

I was beckoned by the emperor to settle down as we began the interview. It was then that I realise the ruler himself was surrounded by half a dozen of men dressed in maid uniforms.

ID Sojourner: Firstly, allow me to express my astonishment in your willingness to accept this session with me. Seeing that the Empire is not exactly on good terms with several factions of the world, are you not afraid this article might be used by your enemies to start a personal attack on yourself or in other undesirable way?

Charles Di Britannia: That is a myth which I seek to dispel. I am not afraid to receive criticism and the fact that I am exposing myself to it by accepting your interview is my proof. Besides, why should I worry about criticism when the world is slowly coming under my control? I would also like to inform you that I am accepting more audiences from other publications as their countries have just been colonised, thanks to Schneizel’s efforts.

ID Sojourner: And that brings us to another question that I am sure, there are a lot of people who are dying to ask you. The Empire has come a long way since its people fled the British Isles many years ago to the American continent, and now it is a superpower. What do you think has been its success? How does the Britannian model work?

Charles Di Britannia: If you have been following my speeches, I have been advocating the spirit of Britannia through them. We are a land of truth, formed out of nothing. In fact, we should not be in existence if you ask me, especially if you are familiar with the history of turmoil our legacy has been through.

This world is full of lies! ‘Thou shalt not kill’…. ‘Thou shalt not steal’ and all that! These are all lies, all deceptions. The world covers behind the veil known as justice and morals, to hide their weakness. Such are their tools to justify their existence!

ID Sojourner: Uh…lol.

Charles Di Britannia: But we see the truth. The one and only truth of this world and it is through our belief of that truth we have been able to exist until now. Survival of the fittest I say. One must devour it all, whether it be other humans, wealth, power or even the world itself! All hail Britannia!

ID Sojourner: If you could elaborate on that. It is no secret that the success of Britannia’s war campaigns lies in the ability of the empire in amassing great wealth. We all know that the economy is sound despite the conflicts of recent.

Charles Di Britannia: Yes. I did say we claim the wealth of others for ourselves. All hail Britannia!

ID Sojourner: What about the aspect of the Britannian economy that has been criticised for a lack of empathy? I understand there are not a lot of practices in the governing of the Empire that protects the interest of enterprises of smaller scale, leaving them vulnerable before giants of various markets like Zainsbury, Vesco and Sunrise. Do you not think the ‘Survival of the Fittest’ policy is actually malignant by discouraging aspiring individuals to start their own business?

It was at that point, the Emperor gazed into my eyes. Though I am under the impression that Charles gave a rather reasonable explanation for my question, I regret to say that this part of the interview was not recorded. At that moment, my tape was abruptly paused after a certain sentence of ‘Look into my eyes. Not around my eyes. Into my eyes…’. So I hope you would pardon this lapse and carry on with the rest of the interview.

ID Sojourner: I am sure you are aware of the United Federation of Nations.

Charles Di Britannia: Some new show on the telly?

ID Sojourner: At the wake of the collapse of the Chinese Federation, as you should know, the Order of the Black Knights initiated the founding of a new alliance of nations.

Charles Di Britannia: Oh.

ID Sojourner: What is going to be the approach of the Britannia Empire? The United Federation comprises of many former colonies of yours, old member countries of the now broken Euro Universe, the old Chinese Federation and not to forget the Order of the Black Knights that was really an upstart back in Area 11, formerly known as Japan. With a history of animosity between the Empire and the members of the United Federation, I can dare say that measures of precautions are needed in response to the rise of this new power?

Charles Di Britannia: Now that is very sensitive indeed. All I can say is that… we are prepared.

ID Sojourner: Perhaps I have to be more indirect. If you do not mind me saying, the way the Empire is managed is pretty much like a family business. You give the overall direction of the Empire’s future while your sons and daughters execute your will. Not to forget you are supported by a core group of nobles, serving as military leaders or governors of colonised area around the world. Do you think they are capable of handling a major crisis, say uprisings in certain areas?

Charles Di Britannia: There is a reason why they are in those positions in the first place.

ID Sojourner: Maybe. But is it a feasible thing to impose the way of Britannia onto its colonies, surely such is the case when you employ Britannians to govern those lands. Geopolitics complicate things.

Charles Di Britannia: O Rly?

ID Sojourner: Ya Rly.

Charles Di Britannia: Whether my practice is most adequate, I shall not comment on it. But I have absolute faith in my children and the nobles in managing our lands. I have absolute faith in them. I cannot possibly imagine someone like say, Schneizel, usurping my throne! Hahaha!

ID Sojourner: There is hardly anyone who does not know of the Knights of Rounds. The Rounds are chosen personally by you, apart from being a capable Knightmare pilot and a soldier, what are other qualities that do you seek before allowing one into such a prestigious order?

Charles Di Britannia: Our Empire is brimming with talent. In fact, we have a surplus of capable warriors. And as you have said, I do look for unique factors before inducting them into the Rounds. Although it varies for individuals, it is basically the need to be outstanding in many different ways.

ID Sojourner: So they need not be the finest warriors? As long as they are special?

Charles Di Britannia: That depends.

ID Sojourner: Let us conclude this with a personal question. Is there anyone whom you greatly admire?

Charles Di Britannia: Excluding myself?

ID Sojourner: Preferably someone else.

Charles Di Britannia: Charlie Chaplin. Now if you would excuse me, I have a bikini wax appointment at the island of Kaminejima.

Code Geass R2 18: A Letter To Crusader And Some Afterthoughts

Dear Crusader, you claim that Lulu is actually a princess but you did not provide any form of evidence to support that claim. Since I have to agree with you, allow me to add the finishing touch to your words by offering undeniable proof that Lulu is a girl.

So now we know why he is not interested in C.C and Kallen. But why is she so obsessed over Nunally?

I used to think that super ownage mechas are cool but recently I find them a wet blanket when they seem to turn the tides drastically. At the rate Kallen and the Guren was going, if Suzaku had not prematurely ended the battle with a weapon with an awkward acronym, she would have wiped out most of the Britannian forces without breaking a sweat. But it does not matter after this episode as I am sure the Lancelot will obtain a brand new upgrade.

Code Geass is constantly surprising us with unexpected twists, recently with Orange’s storm of loyalty and Nunally’s assignment as Governor-General of Area 11. With Anya suffering Geass spasms, foreshadowing is in play and it suggests that she is going to be a key factor to the next Sunrise Surprise. I look forward to it.

[ID Sojourner] Code Geass R2 16: What a pity

I seriously cannot fathom the hate for this series! Sunrise proves they are the anime powerhouse of entertainment with this great episode which is the clam before the storm. Suffice to say, this is the episode where the soldier would fall in with their gear for inspection. And it is still able to squeeze in certain scenes for comic relief.

I enjoyed how the Order of the Black Knights used the loli Kaguya and Tianzi to convince the representatives of the various participating members to support the cause in liberating Japan. The reaction to the request was spontaneous as almost everyone had stood up from their seats to express their agreement. Folks, this only happens in anime politics!

As for the best scene of this episode, if you ask me, it definitely has to be Jeremiah’s voice ID being labelled as ‘ORANGE’ when it appears on Lelouch’s fancy screen with all those funny charts and graphs. He probably does not look at them, and the map is the only relevant thing to him. A twisted vigilante has to practice his ‘JUST AS KEIKAKU’ face while looking at a big map right? Having your nickname as a meme is a sad but awesome thing in the Code Geass universe. Why is Orange-kun siding Lelouch? Why that twist? He deserves a grand entrance in a spanking new Knightmare, shouting ‘ALLLLLL HAAAAIILLLLL BRITAAAAANIIAAAA!!!!!’ as he declares his hostility towards Zero once more. I would surely get a boner because of that!

By the way. If you are reading this post, it means I am already in the U, S and A to meet Charles Biggy Britannia. Who says you are unable blog while away from your laptop? This has been planned!

Code Geass R2 15: Just a bit confused

My moonspeak is horrible so I am baffled by one slight detail. Aren’t all Geass givers, like C.C and formally V.V, bearers of a permanent Geass mark on their bodies? C.C has one on her forehead like her predecessor but why did it vanish after her little waltz with Charles? So is she no longer an immortal? I swore Charles did not manage to complete his funny ritual with C.C because of that last minute cocktease.

Because I know you like the back of my back *inserts laughter of one’s own joke*, I would be expecting you to do a little snippet of your thoughts. This episode has really been satisfactory, unlike a relatively dull one from the previous week. As promised, we had a wonderful mix of over the scale change of events, mecha fights and humour. So assuming the anime scene is like Las Vegas and I am a taxi driver, I would tell the tourists that Code Geass R2 is the best show in town as suggested by the title of this post.

Ummm let’s see. I am supposed to play the recording after ending one segment of my thoughts…

ID Sojourner: DAMN RIGHT YOU ARE! YOU DESERVE TO BE SLAPPED FOR LOSING FAITH IN CODE GEASS WHEN YOU ASSUMED LELOUCH WAS GETTING STUPID. HE WAS JUST RECHARGING HIS MANA.

The Sojourner: Err.. So allow us to carry on. So to summarise things, Lelouch and the Order of the Black Knights managed to turn the tides by troll-baiting luring the Chief Eunuchs into revealing their corrupted intentions, and broadcasting their words across the entire Chinese Federation.

Appearing in a spanking new Knightmare Frame, Lelouch uses superior technology to wipe out a significant chunk of the Eunuchs’ artillery lines. In a flash, the situation had turned favourable for the Black Knights and Xingke and by seizing the opportunity did they defeat the Chief Eunuchs.

Well that was classic Lelouch style of flipping the card. I should have known better than to expect an arduous trial for him. And I wonder how could the masses have responded so quickly to the broadcast to aggregate an uprising of that magnitude.

*presses play for the recording*

ID Sojourner: Diethard broadcasted the Eunuchs’ trolling on a streaming site called Deito Deito and it has instant commenting functions. The viewers were able to post comments like ‘WTF? The Eunuchs suck! Let’s revolt!’ or ‘I hate rebellions but my friend paid me $20 to scream with her’. News spreaded quickly and poof! An uprising!

So I say, Diethard is really one of Lelouch’s top aides. He is such a perverted manipulator of media! I bet he has been devising such brilliant plans so Lelouch/Zero would praise him to the heavens. I am just waiting for him to be Table-tan the 2nd.

OH BOY! IT WAS SO PRICELESS TO SEE THE SHOCKED FACES OF THOSE EUNUCHS! SURPRISE! AND I ALMOST WET MYSELF WHEN I HEARD SCHNEIZEL BLURT OUT THE WORD ‘KEIKAKU’.

GUESS WHO’S BACK?

Code Geass never fails to stupefy me with its plot development. That is why I always look forward to the next episode eagerly.

I am always pondering what plans of brilliance Lelouch is concocting in his mind. Who is going to die and who is going to survive a near death encounter? What sudden twist of plot is going to happen? This is indeed the Lance Burton Magic Show of anime.

In Episode 09 of Code Geass R2, it seems that Lelouch has a strategy to take over the Chinese Federation and stop the marriage between Tian Zi and Pedobear the 1st Prince of Brittania. Intriguing, I wonder what type of super combo is Lelouch going to pull this time.

Also it turns out that Xing Ke is infatuated with Tian Zi? Alright I kid. He has proven himself as a stoic representative of the Chinese Federation and no way is he going to let those eunuchs whose throats are filled with helium sell the Chinese Federation and their loli-empress to The Holy Empire of Brittannia.

And it is time the story sheds some light about Emperor Charles’ plan to kill gods or whatever he wants to do. I think the big picture of Code Geass’ plot has been alluding us and it ought to start having itself peeled off layer by layer. Well that is if we are not getting a R3…
