Soul Eater 09: I am Excalibuuurraa

I think I have just found my favourite character in the Soul Eater anime.

P-Meister is busy having his exams at medicine school so I am here to hold the fort for him. Good thing one of the folks in this tavern is a NEET huh? orz

To be honest with you, I seriously do not know how an episodic summary is done so this will be like me fumbling around like a virgin on his breakthrough night. So here we go!

So after a timely intervention by Professor Stein and Maka’s awesome daddy, Soul and Maka managed to avoid a horrible death under the hands of Chrona and her weapon Ragnorak. Survived he may have, but Soul’s injuries lands him bed-ridden in the school’s infirmary.

We get to see some sort of development between Soul and Maka’s relationship in the beginning of this episode; also, ID Sojourner is screaming ‘ARGH GAWDAMMIT! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR??? WHERE IS THE RABU RABU??’.

It seems as if our protagonist, Maka, is getting a bit ‘emo’ because she feels responsible for Soul’s current condition.

ID Sojourner: YOU WERE AFRAID YOUR DEAR SOUL MIGHT HAVE VANISHED FROM THIS WORLD RIGHT? SO THIS BE A LESSON FOR YOU AND JUST CONFESS YOUR FEELINGS!

Despite having an aversion towards story characters getting too angsty, though Maka has yet to cross that line, it does stir a bit of interest in me to ponder over the history behind Maka and Soul.

And it appears that Soul is not as dense as other shounen male characters as he is actually capable of sensing the atmosphere around him. But that does not make him an intriguing character yet. Sorry P-Meister.

Unfortunately for those who looking forward to some rabu rabu development between Soul and Maka, this episode is not about them. As the title of this episode has indicated, the 9th episode is centered around Black Star and Death The Kid.

Made to tidy up the library as a form of corrective work, Black Star ends up slacking by reading some pr0n comics. Soon he is approached by Death The Kid who is in search of a certain book in the library and it just happened to be right next to Black Star.

Having heard of a legendary weapon known as the Sacred Sword -Excalibur-, Death The Kid came to the library to do some research on it. As scribed in the archived texts in the library, Excalibur is the strongest weapon known to the world and is only the greatest of heroes are worthy of wielding it. Excited by legend, Black Star decided to follow Death The Kid to seek out Excalibur.

So the duo managed to locate the resting place of Excalibur and their advancement into the cave is too smooth to be true. But I assure you that the reason behind the lack of booby traps will be revealed to you very soon.

And this is my favourite part of this episode.

So after Pixie chan makes her exit (with the reason behind her reaction still a mystery), the two boys finally make it to the end of the cave where the famed sword awaited them. And without disappointing them, the Excalibur is indeed a fine sword with an aura of regality. The search is over they cheered as they rush forth to claim it.

 

IT AWAITS

This is where the moment of truth came, in the form of a nasty yaoi paddle hitting the two in the back. This is the reason why the sacred sword of glory and honour has always been left alone and never claimed until Black Star and Kid came.

Such a drastic entrance I have to say. I was really eager to finding out how would the human manifestation of the Excalibur look like at that moment.

I was not disappointed.

To summarise things, Excalibur is a very pompous personality. While anyone is capable of being chosen by it, not everyone has the heart of a saint to tolerate his extremely obnoxious behaviour. A stroke of genius to have Koyasu Takehito as the voice actor of Excalibuuurraa. Absolutely brilliant.

So hopefully you can empathise with why Black Star and Death The Kid were so darn irritated by Excalibur with just a few minutes into their first encounter. Annoyed enough they were to put the Excalibur back and return to school.

Wow. Was that a filler episode? It was not really part of the main plot or is it? Will Excalibur return for more awesomeness? I have to say, shounen shows that are not draggy are fun to watch. And the Blue Fox Alley has decided to make Soul Eater the anime to follow weekly. Of course, the P-Meister is the one in charge of doing these episodic summaries. This post has been an exception since he is busy at the moment.

 *Face palm* This is going to be the source of inspiration for many MakaXSoul fan art.

SO WHAT CAN WE EXPECT IN THE NEXT EPISODE?

1. Black Star’s manhood is in danger.

2. The appearance of a new weapon known as the Masamune. It is capable of possessing humans to wield it.

3. So what is next? Hrunting? Frostmourne? I look forward to it.
